SECAUCUS, NJ — Secaucus parents, please be aware of the very real danger of kids falling out of windows, especially during pleasant weather when many of us turn our air conditioning off:

In Nutley last week, police were called to a home when neighbors reported seeing a three-year-old child hanging out of a window. The small child was climbing out of a second-story window on Washington Avenue in Nutley, police said.

When officers arrived, they found a three-year-boy with his body handing out of the open window. Officers climbed a fire escape and secured the child, and found that the father was inside the home sleeping. No arrests were made. This was reported in the Aug. 3 - Aug. 8 Nutley police blotter, which they posted to Facebook.

This incident is hardly isolated: In May of this year, a toddler fell out of an open window in downtown Jersey City. The boy fell three stories and was critically injured.

Last Tuesday evening, Aug. 6 in Edison, a toddler suffered minor injuries when he fell out of a second-floor window, police said.

The four-year-old injured his leg and ribs during the fall out of a window in his family's home. The boy was playing on an iPad and being watched by his older brothers, ages 21 and 10, when the two older brothers noticed the toddler was missing and the window was open.

"This toddler apparently landed on a first-floor window awning. It broke his fall, then he rolled off it onto the lawn in his backyard," Edison Police Lt. Robert Dudash said. "Instead of falling onto a concrete walkway or patio, the child fell on grass and thankfully he was not seriously injured."

The brothers called 911, and the boy was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where he was treated for a swollen leg and ankle, bruised ribs, and a lump on his head.

The sibling's parents were not home at the time, and no criminal charges are pending.

Please be mindful of small children around open windows!
