Did you know? Many towns in New Jersey have all-volunteer fire departments, but for some reason the number of people willing to become volunteer firefighters has plummeted in the past 30 years — not just in New Jersey but all over America.

"People just aren't volunteering to jump out of bed at 2 in the morning anymore," one New Jersey firefighter said to Patch.

In fact, some New Jersey towns, such as Princeton and Holmdel, are being forced to move to paid fire department because they can't find enough volunteers. A move like this nearly always comes at a cost to the town — it means property taxes go up. Paid fire departments can be enormously expensive, as taxpayers not only have to pay firefighters a salary, but also provide health insurance and pensions.

So help everyone out and consider becoming a volunteer firefighter! You can be a man or a woman, minimum age is 16 to apply and you must be a resident of Secaucus. No experience or training is necessary. Anyone interested may also stop by any firehouse on Sunday mornings from January through May or Monday evenings from June through September.
