SECAUCUS, NJ — This should come as no surprise to anyone familiar with skyrocketing rent prices in town: Secaucus was ranked as the 4th most expensive town in the entire New York City metro area in which to rent an apartment.

The study was done by Zumper, an apartment-search platform (think Zillow or Trulia, but just for renters). They analyzed 26 towns in the greater New York City metro area, from New York City proper (the five boroughs) down to New Brunswick and as far north as Bridegport, Connecticut.

They just released their findings this week: Secaucus came in as the fourth most expensive city for rentals, making it cheaper than New York, Hoboken and Fort Lee, but more expensive, on average, than Jersey City.

No doubt new luxury apartment complexes such as Xchange and The Harper (by Walmart) drove up the average rental prices in town. Secaucus' infamous crackdown on illegal apartments last year also eliminated much of the cheaper units in town.

Compare Secaucus to neighboring towns, where it is much, much cheaper to rent in: In Hackensack, the average rental price is $1,600 for a one-bedroom. In Union City, it's $1,560. In Clifton, the price really drops to $1,290.

Secaucus has a reputation as a safe town, with good public schools, reliable public transportation into Manhattan and elsewhere, and lots of parks and amenities for residents.

If you want cheap, move to Bridgeport or Newark: It's the area's most affordable city with one bedrooms priced at $1,150, then East Orange was second with rent at $1,160 and Newark at third, where the average rental price is $1,210. The price of one-bedroom units in Secaucus remained flat, while the cost of two-bedrooms actually slightly decreased 0.4% to $2,780.
