Turnover Time

A behind-the-scenes look at the "Miracle on Baker Street"

For me, summer begins when the tent goes up. Each year, part of the Morrow Memorial Church parking lot is given over to a big tent that arrives in June and stays until late July. The tent holds toys and furniture during the Turnover Sale, the rummage sale sponsored annually by the United Methodist Women.

Briefly, the sale is donated goods that are sorted and sold by volunteers.  The proceeds benefit missions, including local charities. Items that remain at the end of the sale, which lasts for much of July, are donated to a number of agencies that come year after year.

It’s hard to describe the Turnover without resorting to cliché, and even those fail. You’ve heard the expression “everything but the kitchen sink?” Most years the Turnover sells at least one proverbial sink – along with almost anything else you can imagine that’s not food or pets. But if you want a pot to cook in, or cage for that hamster, we’ve got those!

This is my fifteenth summer volunteering at the sale, so this blog will take readers behind-the-scenes at the Turnover, offering useful shopping tips, and even showcasing some of the funniest and most fabulous goods on offer.

When you see the tent, you’ll know: it’s (almost) Turnover Time!
