Carjacking, Kidnapping, Sexual Assault Ends in Conviction

A 20-year-old woman was carjacked in South Orange and escaped her attacker in Newark.

A 24-year-old Newark man was Tuesday convicted of carjacking, kidnapping, sexual assault and robbery in connection with a 2011 incident in South Orange.

Isiah Green carjacked a 20-year-old woman in South Orange on December 20, 2011 at around 2 p.m.

Green forced her to drive around while he molested her, authorities said. Eventually, she drove to Vailsburg Park in Newark, where she rammed a parked sheriff’s vehicle and jumped out the car and escaped her attacker, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and South Orange Police Chief James Chelel.

“The victim in this case was extraordinarily brave under the most horrendous circumstances,’’ said Assistant Prosecutor Brian Matthews, who tried the case. “The verdict provides some comfort to a young woman who has been through a horrific ordeal.’’

Green has three prior convictions – two for narcotics offenses and one for receiving stolen property.

Sentencing is scheduled for June 3. Green faces up to 60 years in prison.
