Saturday's "Read Comics in Public Day " celebrates a new collection at the library
At last there's a holiday for those of us who still ponder Betty versus Veronica, and who wonder what all Snoopy had in that doghouse. Tomorrow, Saturday is Read Comics in Public Day, and the South Orange Public Library is taking the opportunity to spotlight its new Jeff Peters Collection.
Read Comics in Public Day is a project of The Daily Cross Hatch, an independent, non-profit comics blog. The day is intended to acknowledge a certain truth: even if we don't admit it, lots of us read comics, from daily funnies to graphic novels.
And, luckily for South Orange, the collection of works has grown by some 2,500. When he closed Commuter Comics at the end of 2009, owner Jeff Peters donated comic books, graphic novels, children's books, DVDs, and young adult novels to the South Orange and Maplewood Public Libraries. A sample of the collection is on display in South Orange, along with a poster encouraging readers to show the world their comics on Saturday.
