Meet Thursday Habit

The band will perform at Rent Party on May 10; singing about midlife crises, good whiskey and a Thursday ritual or two

Band Name: Thursday Habit

Who's in the band?

Mark Asch plays keyboards, sings the majority of the lead vocals, and hosts rehearsals. He has toured this world and several others with various bands.

Steven Feldman plays drums, percussion and is the band's spiritual guru. He has performed at Maplewoodstock more times than any other person, living or corporate.

Howard Finkel is on bass, and before some Patch readers were even born, he replaced Sting in the band Cherry Vanilla. No, that's not a joke. Look it up.

Anders Fransson plays guitar, sings harmony, and builds complex things out of little bits. He's Swedish, and is a direct descendant of Thor, or so he tells the ladies.

Marc Stern plays guitar and does not sing any background vocals, for which we are grateful. Guitar strings fear him; standard chord voicings know him not. The members of Thursday Habit write all the band's music collaboratively.

How did your band get started?

Feldman approached Stern at Maplewoodstock 2005 and asked if they could try writing some songs together. With the assistance of some really good whiskey, the creative chemistry was quickly discovered. Other members were soon added, and the musical kinship flourished.

Who or what influences your band?

Who? Foo Fighters, Pink Floyd, Yes, Jethro Tull, Peter Gabriel, and Radiohead, to name a few. Also Selena Gomez, but only a teensy weensy bit. What? Mid-life crises, the aforementioned whiskey, and having sanctuary every Thursday night with good friends who push each other's artistic limits.

How did you choose your band name?

I'm not allowed to say, but if you were to attend one of our rehearsals (which are habitually held on a particular night of the week) we might tell you.

How does this particular musical experience inform your life here in SO-M?

This band is a product of this wonderful neighborhood—we all live here and found each other through various musical endeavors. A community as supportive of live music as this one is a rare thing, and we've made myriad friends as a result. We all go to each other's gigs, fill in when somebody's out of town, and talk endlessly about music, gear, and our adventures.

When local folks come to see you play, what should they look or listen for, in particular? Thoughtful, original alternative/progressive music. An energetic stage show. And hordes of leather-clad rock chicks thrashing to...wait, no, that was Stern's band in the 90's.
