Michael Rabinowitz Jazz Bassoon in the Wild with Peter Moffitt at Jazz On Sloan at the South Orange Gazebo

Downtown After Sundown Performance - Michael Rabinowitz Jazz Bassoon in the Wild with Peter Moffitt at Jazz On Sloan South Orange Gazebo

Ever heard of a Jazz "Bassoonist?"

Since folks have seen the event Michael Rabinowitz Bassoon in the Wild with Peter Moffitt where he is coming to Jazz On Sloan at the South Orange Gazebo to play the Bassoon, I get asked

"What is the Bassoon?"

fter a little research I see Wikipedia defines it as - Bas·soon (bə-so͞on′, bă-) n. A low-pitched woodwind instrument with a double reed, having a long wooden body attached to a U-shaped lateral tube that leads to the mouthpiece. The range of this instrument is typically two octaves lower than that of the oboe.

I also note that Bram van Sambeek, a virtuoso bassoonist who has often played with the London Symphony Orchestra, lives in the Hague once said in 2015, “At the moment, only about 1% of people on the street can even recognise this instrument (the Bassoon),” he said. “I am always prepared for the fact that people won’t know what it is.”

Basson Has A Long History

Interesting in that the history of the Bassoon is old and long. "Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven all give the bassoon prominent lines in their compositions. Many composers wrote concerti for it, and it was included in many chamber music works. The bassoon was prized not only for its ability to play a solo line but also for the fact that it could blend so well and easily with other instruments." (http://www.classicalmpr.org)
