Seton Hall Speaker to Address Medical Tragedies

On Wednesday September 17, Sorrel King will speak at Seton Hall, on the need for improved medical practices.

The Joan Rivers case has reminded all of us about the need for improved medical practices to avoid tragic errors. At the forefront of that issue for more than a decade is Sorrel King, the Baltimore mom who created the Josie King Foundation after losing her 18-month-old daughter to medical errors and miscommunication at Johns Hopkins Hospital in 2001.

King, named one of the “50 Women Changing the World” by Woman’s Day in 2010, will speak at Seton Hall University on Wednesday September 17 at 6:00 p.m. till 7:30 p.m. at the Walsh Gymnasium in South Orange.

The Josie King Foundation offers initial funding to innovative patient safety ideas that can be duplicated in other health care settings. Projects include:

  • Care for the Caregiver which offers coping mechanisms to health care professionals
  • Condition H which allows patients and their families to call a rapid response team to the bedside in the case of quickly deteriorating patient conditions
  • Josie King Grant for Nursing Innovation in Patient Safety is designed to encourage nurse-based studies into patient safety.
