Seton Hall Wins First Big East Title in 23 Years

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - The Seton Hall Pirates made history today by winning their first Big East title in 23 years beating No. 3 Villanova 69-67 at Madison Square Garden. The last time the team won the title was in 1993.

Experts say the loss could end up costing Villanova the No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. Fans will await the decision on Selection Sunday that will be aired on CBS at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Credit for the win went to Isaiah Whitehead, the sophomore guard from Brooklyn, who finished with 26 points. As explained by the Bleacher Report, with just 18 seconds left in the game, Whitehead drew a foul, made a successful layup before going on to make the free throw that drew the team to a 69-67 victory.

The win also means Hall will be making its first NCAA bid since 2006. Losing just twice since Jan. 23, Hall moves to 25-8 with the win with experts not ruling out a No. 4 seed for the Pirates.

"I'm going to get in trouble for this, but I don't care," Hall coach Kevin Willard said after the game. "You know, everyone always asks questions about, is this tournament in trouble? The home, the ACC and the Big Ten. They want to come in to New York. The Big East is -- this is the home. We are the home. We will always be the home."
