SHU Receives Gift of One Million Dollars

The Elsie E. and Joseph W. Memorial Fund of the Community Foundation of New Jersey establishes a memorial scholarship and research fund at the Stillman School

What would you do with a million dollars? This is the question individuals, for profits and nonprofits alike hope they get to answer someday. For the Stillman School of Business at Seton Hall University, that day has come.

To honor the memory of Elsie E. and Joseph W. Beck, the trustees of the Foundation have established the Elsie E. and Joseph W. Beck Memorial Scholarship and Research Fund at the Stillman School with a one-million-dollar gift.

With this gift, which will be distributed over the next 20 years, the School can select up to five students annually to receive $10,000 each. These students will be known as “Beck Scholars.” Any business undergraduate student with a financial need is eligible, and students may receive awards in multiple years.

Moreover, up to a third of the annual funds may be used to support faculty research.

“We are so grateful for this incredibly generous gift,” said Joyce Strawser, acting dean of the Stillman School of Business. “These funds will help to open the doors for talented students for whom the cost of a private school education may be out of reach and will allow us to support outstanding research. This gift will strengthen our ability to attract and retain the very best students and faculty, further advancing the quality and reputation of the Stillman School.”

“Joseph Beck served on the Stillman School’s advisory board for several years, and this gift creates a living legacy through the work and achievements of these Beck Scholars and researchers,” said Stephanie Hauge, director of corporation and foundation relations at Seton Hall University.

The trustees of The Elsie E. and Joseph W. Memorial Fund of the Community Foundation of New Jersey will be invited each year to attend the Stillman School’s Integrity and Professionalism Scholarship Luncheon. The Beck Scholars will be recognized at the luncheon, along with other business students receiving scholarship awards from multiple gift sources.
