Village opens SOPL late as a cooling center; pool now open for all residents
Village President Douglas Newman announced that the South Orange Public Library will extend its hours until 9p.m. tonight to serve as an emergency cooling center during the heat wave. Other Village buildings are available during business hours. In addition, he notes that the pool is open until 8 p.m. UPDATE: The pool is open to all residents with proof of residency, regardless of whether or not they hold pool badges. Minors must be accompanied by adults.
The Village website has helpful advice for residents. In particular, residents can contact the  Office of Emergency Management in case of distress to themselves or to neighbors. Village Hall's phone number is (973) 378-7715

Newman further notes that, Â according to PSE&G, about 6,300 of its 2.1 million customers statewide currently are without power due to the extreme heat. Â Although PSE&G expects to have enough electricity to meet demand, it recommends conserving electricity, where possible, based on these conservation tips:
·     Turn off everything you're not using; lights, TVs, computers, etc. Use dimmers, timers and motion detectors on indoor and outdoor lighting.
·     Close blinds, shades and draperies facing the sun to keep the sun's heat out and help fans and air conditioners cool more efficiently.
·     Close doors leading to uncooled parts of your home.  With central air, close off vents to unused rooms.
·     Delay heat-producing tasks such as washing and drying laundry or dishes until later in the day, and wait until load is full.
·     Refrain from using nonessential appliances. Unplug or use only when necessary an extra refrigerator in your garage.
·     Consider setting air conditioners to 78 degrees, health permitting.
To report a power outage, call PSE&G's Customer Service line, 800-436-PSEG.
