Surviving and Thriving in Spanish at CHS for a Day

Picture the scene: a restaurant, an intrepid diner, and a patient waitstaff.

"I was in a Mexican restaurant, where the staff were used to high school Spanish students trying to practice on them," said the diner.  "I confidently addressed the waiter as 'camarón,' only to have him reply with a smile, "No, no shrimp." It took a while for me to realize I sounded like I was trying to order something that was not on their menu instead of addressing him as 'camarero, waiter.' "

Could this be you? No longer, once you sign up for Laura Meischenguiser's "Survival Spanish" at CHS for a Day on March 16.

Spanish teacher Meschenguiser reassured new language learners or those who high school Spanish is a little rusty. "Once you discover the Spanish language new worlds start opening up to you," she says. "Strange sounds that made no sense to the ear become full of meaning."

And, she adds on a practical note, even a little Spanish goes a long way. "Make your travel experiences more exciting and rewarding," she says.  "It is never too late."
