2 Springfield Students Win Scholarships From Massachusetts

The two Springfield residents are currently attending college in Massachusetts.

SPRINGFIELD, NJ — Two students from Springfield going to college in Massachusetts were awarded scholarships from the Massachusetts Society of Certified Public Accountants (MSCPA).

Samantha Calvao, who goes to Holyoke Community College, won the PwC Scholarship, and Ishimwe Uwase, a student at UMass Lowell, received the RSM, LLP Scholarship.

“The Society is honored to support these remarkable students who are the next generation of CPAs [certified public accountants]” said Amy Pitter, president, and CEO of the MSCPA.

The organization awards scholarships ranging from $2,500 to $10,000, and has given away over $1.5 million since 2006. This year scholarships totaled a record $145,500.

Both Calvao and Uwase are on their way to becoming certified public accountants.

Calvao is fluent in Portuguese and has played soccer since she was 6 years old. She is on the National Honors Society and Dean’s List.

Uwase arrived to the US without knowing a word of English in 2007, so math became her favorite subject. She is on the Honors College and Beta Gama Sigma.
