Security Continues to Tighten Ahead of Super Bowl, Police Chief Says

Springfield Police Chief John Cook discussed heightened security ahead of Super Bowl Sunday at Tuesday evening's Springfield Township Committee meeting.

Cook said, as expected, security has continued to "tighten up" over the past several days. He said recent concerns regarding terrorist attacks in Russia ahead of the Winter Olympics in Sochi focus on mass transit facilities. 

Another major concern, Cook explained, is human and sex trafficking, which he described as the exploitation of women and children and a "huge problem during major sporting events." The police chief assured the public that measures were being taken behind the scenes "far and above what you'd expect."

Cook also discussed Superbowl events residents may find of interest. Superbowl Boulevard, located at Broadway from 34th Street to 47th Street in Manhattan, will be open from Wednesday through Saturday. Additionally, Liberty Science Center is offering free admission to those 18 and younger on Saturday. "Gridiron Glory" combines sports, history, and culture into an exciting, interactive exhibition, featuring rare historical artifacts, hands-on fun, and chances to meet NFL alumni. The exhibition includes a "Hometown Heroes" section showcasing the Giants and Jets teams.

Springfield's seniors will celebrate Superbowl Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. at the Chisholm Center.
