Who's Vaccinated In Summit? 93 Percent Of Seniors Got 1 Shot

The state of New Jersey released updated percentages late Friday of who's COVID-vaccinated in Summit for each age group.

SUMMIT, NJ — As new coronavirus cases in Summit drop to levels not seen since a year ago, the state of New Jersey released updated numbers Friday showing that 93 percent of residents in town who are over 65 have gotten at least one vaccine shot.

The CDC said this month that people can consider themselves "fully vaccinated" and protected two weeks after their final shot. Vaccines are not yet available for children under 12.

Last week, the city of Summit reached a milestone in the coronavirus pandemic that it hadn't achieved since late June 2020: the Regional Health Department reported only two positive, confirmed COVID-19 cases in the week ending this past Thursday. READ MORE: Only 2 COVID Cases In Summit

And vaccination efforts continue, with 93 percent of residents over 65 having received at least one shot as of Friday (see below for the breakdown by age group).

For Summit, the percentages of people fully vaccinated as of Friday, according to state of NJ numbers, were:

All ages: 57 percent
18 and over: 76 percent
65 and over: 87 percent

The state said these were the numbers four weeks ago:

All ages: 43 percent
18 and over: 59 percent
65 and over: 82 percent

As for having received one shot, the numbers as of Friday are:

All ages: 68 percent
18 and over: 86 percent
65 and over: 93 percent

The city of Summit said on Friday that in Union County, 286,127 residents (51.4 percent of the total population, including children) have received one dose of the vaccine, and 230,429 (41.4 percent of the total population) are fully vaccinated.

City's Percentages

On Friday, the city had some breakdowns from Thursday, before the numbers were updated. They were:

As of May 27 in Summit, those receiving one dose:
• 66 percent of the population aged 12 and older;
• 85 percent of adults aged 18 and older; and
• 92 percent aged 65 and older.

Fully vaccinated in Summit:
• 55 percent of the entire population aged 12 and older;
• 75 percent of adults aged 18 and older; and
• 88 percent of those aged 65 and older.

Other updates

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy lifted the indoor mask and social distancing mandate as of last Friday for fully vaccinated residents.

For those not vaccinated, the CDC continues to encourage you to wear a face mask indoors when around others, especially when social distancing is not possible.

Last month, a CDC Panel recommended resuming the Johnson & Johnson vaccine after reviewing reports of 13 women getting blood clots — three fatal — out of 7.98 million receiving the shot. The shot will now come with a warning.

The state of New Jersey's daily death toll was at its lowest last Sept. 8, when only 2 deaths were reported in one day, after a summer of lockdowns. New Jersey's peak daily death toll on April 30, 2020 was 460 fatalities reported in one day. On Sept. 8, only 2 deaths were reported in one day.
