SUMMIT, NJ — The Summit Fire Department responded to 189 calls for service last month, including a call to rescue a child who was accidentally locked in a car.

Among the reports just released for last month, at 11:33 a.m. on May 11, "FD responded for an emergency with a child locked in a car in the area of Irving Place. Upon arrival a small child was observed in the back seat. Entry was gained to the vehicle and the child was removed without injury."

A spokesperson said this was not a case of a child being left in a hot car, just a car accidentally locked without an adult inside.

  • May 8, 11:52 p.m.: Firefighters responded to Route 24 with aid from Millburn and Springfield for a reported motor vehicle crash. Members investigated the crash and found someone with a reported injury. The SFD stood by until they were released by police.
  • May 16, 3:03 a.m.: The department responded to a car hitting a tree near 74 Mountain Ave. The Summit PD and EMS were on the scene. The FD secured and stabilized the vehicle while EMS evaluated the sole occupant. Units were released by the Police department and command was terminated.
  • May 17, 3:25 a.m.: Units responded in the area of 11 Mountain Ave. for a motor vehicle accident. On arrival, FD found a single vehicle off the roadway and in the yard of a nearby property. The driver was alone and out of the vehicle. Summit EMS provided patient care. Firefighters evaluated the vehicle and secured the battery. The scene was turned over to the police department.

Mulch Fire

  • May 18, 2:20 p.m. The Fire Department responded to a Summit Avenue business for a report of a mulch fire in the rear parking area. On arrival, a pressurized water extinguisher was used to extinguish the small fire.

Stove Problems And Fire

  • May 28, 6:43 p.m.: The department responded to a Beekman Road residence for a residential fire alarm. While in route, they were advised of a fire in the oven and upgraded the incident, bringing automatic aid from Springfield FD and Millburn FD. There was smoke on the first and second floors. The occupants reported seeing flames from the rear of the stove. Firefighters found that the fire was out already and secured gas and electric to the stove. They also removed the back plate of the oven and found fire damage to the controls and wiring for the oven. A positive pressure fan was used to remove the smoke from the residence. An investigation was requested and handled by on duty personnel. The occupants were advised to contact a licensed contractor to evaluate the stove. The scene was turned over to the residents.
