Cuban Amateur Boxer, Summit Man Dies From Cancer

Services for Rolando Socarras, 87, of Summit will be Saturday. His greatest love was for his family.

SUMMIT, NJ — A former Cuban amateur boxer and Summit local, Rolando Socarras, 87, died after battling cancer on June 7, 2018 with his loving family by his side.

Socarras was born in Havana, Cuba to the late Rolando and Lutgarda (Perez) Socarras and came to live in Summit more than 40 years ago. He worked for Overlook Hospital in the Environmental Services Department for 25 years before retiring in 1994.

Socarras loved watching boxing and was an amateur boxer when he lived in Cuba. He also enjoyed playing dominoes, according to his obituary by Ippolito Funeral Home.

Socarras' greatest love was for his family.

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Yluminada (nee Cambara), his loving daughters, Ludgarda Soto (Sigfredo), Maria Hughes (David) and Ynes Allocco (Augie); his dear sister, Maria Rodriguez; his cherished grandchildren, Angel, Andre, Esteban, Vanessa, Rebecca, Emmanuel, Isaiah, and Rachel Soto, Joshua, Erica, Rebecca and Hannah Allocco, Angelica and Richard Hughes, and his great-grandchildren, Ashley, Joab, Cain, Lily, Bishop, and Elijah Soto, all of whom he loved dearly.

He was pre-deceased by his brother, Armando Socarras.

"Socarras will be sorely missed by those who knew and loved him," the obituary states.

Visitation and service of remembrance will be held at Liberty Church, 953 W. Chestnut St., Union on Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon.

In lieu of flowers, make donations in Rolando’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Hospital through his personal memorial donation page at inmemoryof-memorial.org.
