Doll Created By Summit Woman Gets New Life In Hoboken Window

The 30-year-old "Dolly" changes outfits and is gaining fans with an Instagram account. She was dressed most recently for Halloween.

SUMMIT, NJ — When Laura Steele-Liebman and husband Jonathan moved to a new building on Hoboken's Park Avenue last year, Laura decided to use their large window to show off a doll that Jonathan's mother, Summit resident Cynthia Liebman, had created 30 years ago.

Laura began dressing the doll in different outfits, particularly for holidays like St. Patrick's Day and Halloween.

With an elementary school nearby, children started taking notice. Now, the doll and her changing outfits are the talk of local kids.

And last month, Laura added an Instagram account for Dolly. Besides photos of Dolly in her holiday outfits, the account includes photos of people on the street giving Dolly long looks and taking photos of her.

Laura said she began putting Dolly in the window as a tribute to Cynthia and her creations.

"I have the best mother-in-law in the world," said Laura, a comedian, last week. (Jon is a guitarist). "I am super lucky."

Cynthia Liebman splits her time between Summit and Florida, Laura said.

"Jon and I are always amazed at the number of people, especially children, [who] stop and look up at Dolly from the street," Laura said.

She added, "We hope everyone will tag Dolly in their photos of her (if they use Instagram ), so we can share our love of Dolly around the world."

Besides Halloween and St. Patrick's Day, Dolly also celebrates Valentine's Day, Easter, and even Christmas and Hannukah at the same time.

Laura lived in Summit for 27 years, as well as Minnesota and Colorado, before moving to Hoboken, while Jonathan has lived in Maplewood and Watchung.
