Former Summit Police Chief Dies At 91

A 34-year veteran of the police force, Frank Formichella, 91, served as chief for seven years in Summit.

SUMMIT, NJ — Former Summit Police Chief Frank Formichella, 91, died Saturday, June 10 in Kissimme, Florida. He was born on Oct. 15, 1925.

A 34-year veteran of the police force, Formichella served as chief for seven years, Summit Police announced.

He was known for his focus on crime prevention programs, and emphasis on officer visibility within the community. In addition to his service with the Summit Police Department, Formichella also served four honorable years in the United States Armed Forces during World War II as a member of the Navy's Armed Guard, according to Summit Police.

He attended Union County College and was also responsible for starting community outreach programs in the city, including a youth boxing program in cooperation with the Summit Police Athletic League.

Formichella last visited the Summit Police Department in July 2016 to meet with Chief Robert Weck and some of the “new” officers. During his visit, Formichella described the Summit Police as “the finest department he had ever encountered.”

In retirement, Formichella moved from New Jersey to Florida.

"He will be missed, and his contribution to our city will never be forgotten," Summit Police Department posted on Facebook.

Services will be held Summit and arrangements will be made by Joseph A. Scarano Pines Memorial Chapel in Florida.
