The theme of this year’s summer reading program is Tails and Tales, and the library has organized many animal-themed programs for the preschoolers, elementary schoolers, and teens! Programs for preschool—teen will be held on the library’s front lawn under a tent. Masks are optional, we’re asking adults, kids, and teens to use their own judgement. If it rains, we’ll unfortunately have to cancel the events, so keep your eyes out for rain, and call us at 908-273-0350 to find out if the program is on! We’ve also got several animal-themed programs for adults (all adult programs will be delivered via Zoom).

Last summer over 300 children and adults participated in our Summer Reading Program-a big drop from the prior year, which was 700—impacted by the pandemic and the closure of the library during prime summer sign up time. The library didn’t reopen to the public until the first week of July. This year the early registration combined with the library being open to full regular hours is sure to translate into higher numbers. The library’s hours are 9am-9pm Monday-Thursday and 9am-5pm Friday and Saturday.

Aside from being one of the most popular activities we offer at the library, our Summer Reading Program is also one where every member of the family is encouraged to participate—with a program for every age and stage beginning at 6 months through adult. With an emphasis on promoting literacy and a love of reading in the community, the Summit Free Public Library fulfills its mission by encouraging children to continue to stretch their imaginations and improve their reading skills throughout the summer months, parents to read to their babies, and adults to challenge themselves to set goals to read more. It’s also an opportunity to try a new genre—mysteries, biographies, science-themed books, history—stretch yourself and encourage your kids and teens to try something new.

The Summit Free Public Library Summer Reading Program starts June 20th and ends August 21—it’s open to both residents and non-residents—the earlier you sign up, the more books you will have the opportunity to read and the more points you’ll get to earn prizes! Children (with their parents) and teens should sign up at the ‘Ask Us’ Desk in the Children’s Room and adults should visit the Information Desk in the Main Room. With programs for pre-school, elementary school, teens (rising 6th graders-high school), and adults—the library has something special for every reader in the family!
