Summit Common Council Election Numbers Finalized

The official vote totals in Union County races were reported Friday afternoon.

SUMMIT, NJ — The tallies in the Nov. 3 elections on the Union County website — which were revised a few times since Election Day as more mail-in ballots were counted — were official as of Friday. The numbers were updated at 3:19 p.m. that day.

Incumbent Democrat Susan Hairston beat out Republican challenger Eileen Kelly for the 1st Ward Common Council seat.

The final vote totals:

  • Hairston received 3,341 votes.
  • Kelly amassed 2,596 votes.
  • There were four write-in votes.

That race was the only contested race at the local level in Summit.

In the uncontested race for a 2nd Ward council seat:

  • Incumbent council president Marjorie Fox, a Democrat, had 4,389 votes.
  • There were 95 write-ins.

Biden vs. Trump

How did the presidential candidates do countywide?

In Union County, 67 percent of the votes totaled by Friday were for former Vice President Joe Biden, or 170,245 votes. For President Donald Trump, 80,002 votes were cast, or 31 percent.

Libertarian Jo Jorgensen amassed 1,427 votes, write-ins drew 1,050, Howie Hawkins of the Green party drew 792, and other third party candidates drew about 600 votes.
