Summit Cops Rescue Kitten From Truck Undercarriage (Photos)

After a harrowing ride on Route 24 the kitten, dubbed Miracle, is 'doing well' after her ordeal.

SUMMIT, NJ - After traveling more than 30 miles at speeds nearing 70 miles an hour while huddled in the undercarriage of a truck, a six-week old kitten is safe and sound thanks to an observant motorist, the 911 Dog and Cat Rescue and the Summit Police Department.

And those who rescued her have named her Miracle.

According to authorities, Officers Colin Scarpello and Leonard Franchino were dispatched to Route 24 Tuesday for an animal assist call. They were greeted by a truck driver who was flagged down by a passing motorist regarding a small kitten that had been squirreled away in the undercarriage of the trailer, police said.

Scarpello and Franchino were able to get the kitten into a box and transport her to a local animal hospital to receive medical treatment and a checkup, police said.

The Summit Police thanked the passing motorist for spotting the kitten, the truck driver who pulled over to investigate and make the call and Officers Scarpello and Franchino for getting her to safety.

The kitten is approximately six weeks old and was covered in fleas and hot grease before receiving treatment, officials said.

"And a huge thank you to the staff of Morristown Animal Hospital and 911 Dog and Cat Rescue for taking her in," police said.

Officials noted that no one knows how long the kitten was riding underneath the truck or where she came from but everyone agreed it was miracle that Miracle is now safe.

Samantha Judson at 911 Dog and Cat Rescue told Patch that Miracle is doing well.

"She is a healthy kitten," she said.

Judson said that Miracle will be in a foster home for a couple weeks and then put up for adoption.

"But we already have some interest from people wanting to adopt," she said.
