Summit Prepares For Weekend Winter Blast

Mayor Nora Radest said the focus is on anti-icing as the bad weather approaches.

SUMMIT, NJ - As New Jersey braces for the worst round of winter weather since November, Summit Mayor Nora Radest said the focus is on preparation.

"We are watching the forecast and anticipating some days of winter weather ahead,” Radest said. “Before the predicted storms, Division of Public Works crews are focusing on anti-icing and placing a layer of brine on paved surfaces to prevent snow and ice from freezing to the road.”

According to Accuweather, the use of brines is known as anti-icing or pre-wetting measures. Anti-icing can be accomplished by using traditional salt brine, usually a 23 percent salt solution, derived from rock salt, and applying to roadways in preparation for snow and ice.

The City of Summit also posted guidelines for dealing with the snow, including:

  • Keep your cars in the driveway as long as possible
  • Snow should not be pushed into roadways
  • Clear snow from sidewalks within 24 hours of the end of snowfall
  • Treat icy sidewalks with sand for traction and calcium or magnesium chloride for melting

Officials note the the Summit Department of Public Works is responsible for snow and ice removal on 83 miles of Summit streets, this does not include County roads which are entirely maintained by Union County workers.
