Summit Ranked Among Most Popular Places To Buy When Leaving NYC

SUMMIT, NJ — New Yorkers who left the Big Apple for greener pastures during the pandemic flocked to several townships near the Jersey Shore, but those who wanted a city rather than a town chose Summit.

The two most popular counties for those leaving New York last year were Ocean County, New Jersey, and Fairfield County, Connecticut, according to an analysis by the real estate group PropertyShark that compared 2019 and 2020 home sales.

The real estate group published a list of 10 top New Jersey towns and cities in terms of sales increases, and they were:

  2. Brick Township
  3. Jackson Township
  4. Long Beach Township
  5. Little Egg Harbor Township
  6. Wayne Township
  7. Stafford Township
  8. Middletown Township
  9. Berkeley Township
  10. Summit

People sought out single-family detached homes most often, according to the analysis. Property Shark said that Ocean County lured buyers because it was more affordable than the areas further north.

On the New Jersey list, only three suburbs were outside of Ocean County: Wayne in Passaic County, which had 137 more sales in 2020 than 2019; Middletown, in Monmouth County, which had 117 more sales in 2020, and Summit, which was 10th with 96 more sales.

Meanwhile, Closer To The City...

For those looking to rent rather than buy, some New Yorkers stayed closer to Manhattan. A story last November in the New York Times said that more than 3,000 people had changed their address from New York City to Hoboken and the Jersey City waterfront during the pandemic.
