Summit Man, 45, Dies From COVID; Report Includes Vax Status

It's the first time that the weekly Summit case report included, besides numbers, information on a person's coronavirus vaccination status.

Lela Ingram, 65, a resident of Woodbridge and a parishioner of Wallace Chapel in Summit, got the 25,000 coronavirus vaccine dose at the Summit Community Center last month. As of early this week, the center has administered 31,000 shots.

SUMMIT, NJ — Even with a light at the end of the pandemic tunnel — event as coronavirus cases start to decline in New Jersey as vaccinations rise — people are still being exposed to the virus and passing away from it.

The city of Summit lost its 25th resident to coronavirus this week, according to a weekly case update released on Friday. Nearby Westfield reported a similar situation Tuesday.

For the first time, Summit's weekly release included the vaccination status of the person who passed away. "The deceased is a 45-year-old white, non-Hispanic male with pre-existing health conditions," said the message from the city. "They were not vaccinated."

While new cases are on the decline, the virus still remains a factor statewide. There are 1,382 people in New Jersey hospitalized with the virus, 196 on ventilators. There were 32 resident fatalities confirmed from Tuesday to Wednesday.

Studies have shown that the vaccine is at least 95 percent effective against the virus, and among those who still get it, it will reduce the chance of hospitalization and death. (See information on where to get a vaccine below.)
