Summit Vaccine Site, Overlook Medical Aren't Using J&J Vaccine

A Summit site run by Atlantic Health, as well as Atlantic Health's hospitals (including Overlook in Summit), mainly use the other vaccines.

SUMMIT, NJ — Following CDC and FDA recommendations on Tuesday to pause use of the Johnson & Johnson one-dose coronavirus vaccine, all vaccination sites run by Atlantic Health — including a community site in Summit — will "pause" using the Johnson & Johnson COVID vaccine, a spokesman said. However, he noted, "We do not foresee any significant impact or delay in vaccination appointments at any of our community vaccination sites, as the J&J vaccine makes up less than 1 percent of the vaccine doses we’ve administered."

Atlantic Health spokesman Robert Seman said that only some of Atlantic Health's community partners were using the J&J vaccine.

Atlantic Health's hospitals include Overlook Medical Center in Summit, as well as Morristown Medical Center, Chilton Medical Center, Newton Medical Center, Hackettstown Medical Center, Goryeb Children’s Hospital, and Atlantic Rehabilitation Institute.

Atlantic Health's statement said, "At this time, based on guidance from NJDOH, the CDC and FDA, Atlantic Health System is pausing the administration of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine. The pause will remain in place pending additional further federal and state instruction. Currently, Atlantic Health System is only administering vaccines manufactured by Pfizer and Moderna at our vaccination clinics. Individuals with any related symptoms or concerns about their health should contact their doctor."

"We continue to vaccinate New Jersey residents without delay. Those interested in receiving vaccine should sign up for an appointment alert at www.atlantichealth.org/covidvaccine. At this time, we do not schedule first dose appointments by vaccine manufacturer. Vaccine supply is limited and the vaccine available at our centers may change."

The community site in Summit opened in February.
