Fairleigh Dickinson Men's Basketball Players Earn Northeast Conference Weekly Awards

Earl Potts Jr. was named NEC Player of the Week on Monday, while Mike Holloway earned NEC Rookie of the Week honors.

The Fairleigh Dickinson men’s basketball team made its mark upon the Northeast Conference (NEC) weekly awards Monday, Jan. 11 with sophomore Earl Potts Jr. (Severn, Md./Archbishop Spalding ) earning NEC Player of the Week honors for the second time of season and freshman Mike Holloway (Pittsgrove, N.J./Arthur P. Schalick ) named conference rookie of the week.

Potts was also named player of the week for the NEC by College Sports Madness.

The Knights have a 7-8 record on the season.

“It’s great to see both players be recognized in the same week. It shows that not only did they put great numbers up by that we’re playing like a team,” head coach Greg Herenda said. “Earl has been so good for us all year but more importantly he has been very, very consistent. Mike is really starting to come into his own - he has great upside and his ability to pick things up and learn is special. I am very happy for them both.”

Potts was led the Knights to a pair of victories and a shared first place in the NEC standings. He averaged 21.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.0 steals over the course of two games. He shot 60.9 percent from the field and 53.8 percent from long range, making 7-13 shots from beyond the arc.

Potts recorded his second double-double of the season on Thursday, Jan. 7 in an 80-68 win at Sacred Heart, finishing with 20 points and 11 boards.

He converted 8-10 shots from the floor on Saturday, Jan. 9 and drained 4-6 three-point attempts en route to a game-high 22 points in a 92-73 triumph over CCSU. The Severn, M.D. native added five rebounds and three steals.

He ranks fourth in the NEC in scoring (16.1), seventh in made three-pointers (2.0/game), eighth in field goal percentage (.512) and three-point percentage (.375), and 11th in rebounding (5.7).

A force in the middle over the last month, Holloway continued his surge in two wins that pushed his team’s NEC record to 3-1 on the season. Holloway contributed 12.5 points and 6.5 rebounds, and made 60 percent of his shot attempts. He also shot a perfect 7-7 from the line.

He posted his first career double-double in the Jan. 7 80-68 road win over Sacred Heart with 15 points and a personal best of 10 rebounds. Two days later, he tallied 10 points on 5-7 shooting from the floor as the Knights pulled away for a 92-73 victory over CCSU.

Holloway, who has started his last 11 games for the Knights, is averaging 8.6 points per game and ranks second on the team with 5.3 rebounds per game. His 59.3 success rate from the field is the second-best mark in the NEC.

Potts, Holloway and the Knights are on the road, traveling to Pennsylvania’s Saint Francis University on Thursday, Jan. 14 and Robert Morris University on Saturday, Jan. 16. Both games can be seen live online.
