Karla Ketelsen, Former Teaneck Deli Owner, Died Tuesday

She immigrated from Germany.

TEANECK, N.J. — Karla Henriette Ketelsen (nee Nissen), 85, died Tuesday.

She was born in Germany. She married her husband there and bore her children, Erik and Sesle, there too.

The family immigrated to the United States and Ketelsen opened a delicatessen with her husband and brother-in-law.

"[She] was beloved by her entire family, and gave generously of herself and her love to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She transformed every place she lived — from Midlum to Midland Park — into a warm and inviting home," her obituary states. "She took delight in telling stories about her childhood on Foehr and sharing meals and games with her family."

She was predeceased by her husband, Ernst; brother Kurt and great-grandson Parker.

She is survived by her brothers Hermann and Sophus; sister Christia; children Erik and Sesle; grandchildren Erik, Elissa, Sarah, Emily and Ben; and great-grandchildren Anthony, Ashley, Alexander, Andrew, Caroline, Margaret, Nathaniel, Erza, Everett and Freya.

A funeral service will be at Trinity Lutheran Church, 167 Palisade Ave., Bogota Saturday at 10 a.m.; interment will be at George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus.
