Route 4 Crash Left One Man Dead, Teaneck House Damaged: Sheriff

A fundraiser has been started for the long-time Teaneck resident, who recently lost her mother to COVID-19. It has raised nearly $3,000.

TEANECK, NJ — A three car crash left one man dead, and a Teaneck home with significant fire damage, authorities say.

The accident happened on Route 4 West and Wilson Avenue in Teaneck at approximately 5:06 a.m. on Sunday morning. A black Honda rear-ended a minivan, forcing it off the road. The van rolled over, coming to rest on the side of the home at 1096 Wilson Avenue, where it began to burn, said the Bergen County Sheriff's Office.

Parts of Route 4 were closed on Sunday following the crash.

The residents of the Wilson Avenue home were able to evacuate with no injuries and the driver of the minivan was also able to get out of the vehicle and to safety.

After the Honda came to rest on Route 4, the Sheriff's Office says, a 22-year-old passenger of the car stepped into the roadway and was struck by a vehicle in the left lane of traffic.

The victim, who was not identified by the Sheriff's Office, suffered major injuries and was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

Renne Herriott is a resident of the Wilson Avenue home, and told News12 she was sleeping when the van rolled into the home.

She has lived in the home for three decades, and currently resides there with her two children, said Deputy Mayor Elie Y. Katz in his "Tid-Bits" newsletter.

The fire comes only weeks after Herriott's mother died from COVID-19, Katz added.

Now, a Teaneck resident has created a GoFundMe for the family, which has raised $2,817 since its creation on Tuesday. The original goal was $1,000.

"I don’t know this person but I know that they are my neighbor and I am hoping somebody would do the same for us if this ever happened to my family," wrote the fundraiser's creator Jay Siletski.

No charges have been filed at this time, and the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office and Bergen County Sheriff’s Office are investigating.
