Utility Upgrades Expected to be Done by Next Year

PSE&G project will also bring aesthetic improvements, company says.

Utility company work designed to improve the reliability of electricity service in the Teaneck-area is slated to be finished by January 2014, a PSE&G spokeswoman said Tuesday.

PSE&G is working to upgrade its substations on Palisade Avenue, near the Richard Rodda Center, and another facility at the Teaneck-Bergenfield border, company officials have said. Work on overhead and underground lines has also been ongoing.

In the Palisade Avenue upgrade, PSE&G brought in a large temporary substation to prevent any outages during the work, according to Barbara Lynch, a spokeswoman for the project.

While the work will boost the aging stations capacity, Lynch noted the company also planned cosmetic improvements to the site.

The station will no longer use barbed wire and PSE&G will plant bushes around the facility when work is finished, she said. A more "attractive" style of secure fencing will also be installed.

Lynch said any traffic disruptions from the work will be minimal and the company had no plans to take up more space in the nearby Rodda Center parking lot.

Outside of Court Street, no long term road closures are planned, according to officials. The roadway is expected to be blocked until May as part of the PSE&G work.

The work is part of about $3 billion in infrastructure improvements across the state, PSE&G officials have said. The substation project would help lessen the power load on other nearby facilities and limit outages to some 80,000 area customers.
