The inn's website notes the home was built in the 1890s and was an example of Colonial Revival architecture, but had a Victorian flair that has been maintained for decades.
It once belonged to Thomas A. Mathis (as in the man for whom the Mathis Bridge is name) and his wife, Helen S. Steelman, along with Helen's brother and his wife, Maja Leon Berry and Edna Steelman, according to the inn website. "During the two couples’ occupancy, the house was the scene of many elegant parties and dinners," the site notes.
