Cedar Grove Veteran Ensuring Colleagues Are Honored

Shea Sweeney, a lieutenant serving in the Navy, created a wall for veterans serving in the military during the War on Terror.

CEDAR GROVE, NJ — A Cedar Grove man is working to honor the service of his fellow veterans.

Shea Sweeney created an honor roll plaque and placed it in the council chamber at Cedar Grove Town Hall. The names of the men and women who have served in the military during the Global War on Terrorism, including in Afghanistan and Iraq, are listed on the plaque.

Sweeney created the plaque nine years ago for his Eagle Scout project. He is now a lieutenant serving in the United States Navy. Every year he works to add more names to the plaque.

"I just follow the criteria for those people who received the National Defense Service Medal," Sweeney said. The National Defense Service Medal is awarded to servicemen and women who serve during times of war. The United States' Global War on Terrorism began on Sept. 11, 2001, after the terrorist attacks against the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. "Veterans who served in other wars may also be included on the plaque."

Other plaques in the council chamber honor veterans who served in World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam War, and Operation Desert Storm.
