Explore Art and Activism at this Essex Gallery and Museum
The museum includes pieces of artwork from South Africa and a Rosie the Riveter "Selfie Station."

Take a visit to the Newark Museum’s galleries devoted to Arts of Global Africa. Look for the Art for Change symbol on each object’s label to identify pieces that are part of the collection. In an innovative partnership with the Newark Museum, a special rotation highlighting examples of politically engaged works has been put on display in the museum’s galleries devoted to the arts of global Africa to coincide with Gallery Aferro’s exhibition, Election/Erection.
Works include a 1980s anti-apartheid work by South African artist Sue Williamson, a photograph by Zanele Muholi from her series of portraits of the LGBT community in South Africa, and a printed textile dress made to protest female circumcision in Mali. Also featured will be AFRIKEA, an earlier work by Tugbiyele.

Fine Art Commissions for Expansion Campaign Announced
Gallery Aferro has developed some perks in order to thank everyone for their support. They have commissioned Aferro-affiliated artists Jerry Gant, Wendy Letven, Fausto Sevilla, Elizabeth Storm and Joe Waks to create limited edition fine art posters, lovingly printed to a high standard by family-owned local printer Remco Press.
The museum and Gallery were founded in Newark, they love doing what they do in Newark, and “want each of you who donates to feel that excitement.” The posters and other perk items reflect the time and place and “this moment of incredible possibility here in NJ’s largest city, the one and only Newark NJ.”
Visit the campaign and reserve a poster perk. To learn more about Jerry Gant and the other artists, visit aferro.org
