No Alcohol On PATH Trains, NJ Transit Vehicles For New Year's Eve: Authorities

PATH and NJ Transit officials are enacting alcoholic beverage bans for New Year's Eve 2016.

Clarification: An earlier version of this article omitted a recent alert from NJ Transit officials about an alcoholic beverage ban for NYE 2016, and may have inadvertently implied that drinking alcohol will be permitted aboard NJ Transit trains this New Year’s Eve. We apologize for any confusion.

Make sure to finish your drink before you get on the PATH or NJ Transit this New Year’s Eve.

Both agencies have announced that for New Year’s Eve 2016, they will be enacting alcoholic beverage bans.

“New Year’s Eve, passengers are restricted from carrying or consuming alcoholic beverages while riding on PATH,” the Port Authority announced via an online alert on Tuesday.

However, the alert may be redundant; the Port Authority’s current Rules and Regulations expressly prohibit alcohol on a normal basis:

“No person shall drink, or carry an open container of any alcoholic beverage,” the agency states on its website.

While it is normally legal to drink alcoholic beverages aboard NJ Transit trains, certain events have seen temporary booze bans in the past, such as on St. Patrick’s Day.

This year, as in years past, NJ Transit will be prohibiting alcohol on all of its vehicles for New Year’s Eve.

According to a commuter advisory issued on Monday:

“Please note that no alcoholic beverages will be permitted on board trains, light rail vehicles, buses or in any NJ TRANSIT facility. This policy will be strictly enforced by the NJ TRANSIT Police Department on New Year’s Eve and after midnight.”

All drinks – including alcohol – are banned from NJ Transit buses at all times.
