According to a release, Martin was the former president of the NFL Players Association, as well as one of the game’s premier defensive linemen in the 1970s and ‘80s. He led the Giants to their first Super Bowl in 1987, and became the NFL’s all-time leader in touchdowns scored by a defensive lineman, including an interception that coach Bill Parcells called “the greatest football play that I’ve ever seen.”
In 2007, he walked over 3,000 miles across the nation, dedicating his journey to the rescue and recovery workers who volunteered their efforts during 9/11, and raised millions of dollars for their medical care.
