WARREN, NJ — A community is rallying behind John Thomas Torrisi, a beloved third grade student at Woodland Elementary School in Warren.

Affectionately called "J.T.," he is known for being a warmhearted, 8-year-old boy whose smile lights up a room, according to a fundraising page set up for him. He's currently fighting for his life.

It began on the night of Feb. 12 when JT began complaining of a headache and then vomiting. He was taken to Overlook Emergency Room in Summit where a computerized tomography (CT) scan showed that he had bleeding in his brain, according to a GoFundMe set up in his name.

He was transferred to Morristown Memorial’s Pediatric ICU for urgent care, where he fell into a coma. It was found that J.T. had also suffered two small strokes, according to the GoFundMe.

As of Sunday, J.T. woke up from his coma and was able to shake his head "yes" and "no" and follow some commands of the doctors. He is still not speaking, an update on the site stated.

J.T. is being cared for by his single mother Jessica Torrisi. She has not left his bedside since he was admitted in February, the page said.

The GoFundMe was created to help offset medical bills during J.T.’s recovery and anticipated therapy. Since it was created Saturday almost $13,000 of the $50,000 goal has been raised.
