Dear Editor:

My husband and I moved our family to Watchung predominantly for the school system, but also because Watchung boasted the best tax rate in Somerset County and the close proximity to the city and the small community feel were big draws as well.

Sadly, the last two years, we have seen a sharp increase in our taxes while, quite frankly, not getting anything for it except some new banners and street signs. While we agree we needed some updates to our little town, no beautification has occurred...but our taxes have been raised.

Watchung residents face some big ticket expenses in the near future; such as, Best Lake and Watchung needing to be dredged at a price tag of a million bucks each. This council's new library cost is $6.6 million. Our schools needs major capital improvements, which will raise taxes above $10 million. Watchung residents deserve fair representation to protect all of us, not just those in the majority.

Ron Jubin, PhD, who as a virologist, has fortuitously served Watchung residents during Covid by working closely with the Department of Health to ensure Watchung residents are informed and safe as well, but most importantly, Ron has ensured that the council be transparent and honest by acting on our behalf.

Freddie Hayeck is a lifelong resident of Watchung who has gone through Watchung's school system. He sits on the Watchung Hills Regional Board of Education as well as volunteering with the Watchung Rescue Squad so he has intimate knowledge of our community.
Watchung, we can do better than this? We completely agree and that's why Jubin and Hayeck have our votes so honor, honesty and transparency can be restored to the Council.
