Mercer County College Announces Black History Month Lineup

This year's theme is "destination vs. reality," and events will take place on the West Windsor and Trenton campuses.

WEST WINDSOR TOWNSHIP, NJ — February is Black History Month, and Mercer County Community College has announced a full slate of events to celebrate. This year’s theme is “destination vs. reality,” with the college hosting a number of special events emphasizing culture, relationships and education.

The events are split between the college’s West Windsor Campus, and the James Kerney Campus (JKC) in Trenton. Closing ceremonies will be held at West Windsor.

It all kicks off on Feb. 1 with a Fashion Show Scholarship Event at JKC from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Minority vendors will sell a variety of products, and a live band made up of MCCC alumni will perform.

Opening ceremonies commence at 11:30 a.m. Feb. 5 at JKC. The keynote speaker is Marjorie Perry, President and CEO of MZM Construction and Management Company Inc. There will be a luncheon catered by Smoke House Grill.

Kelsey Theatre on the college’s West Windsor Campus will host Celebrations of Song and Dance on Feb. 22, 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The event features a series of performances by Mercer County Community College students and staff, hosted by staff members Hope Jarvis and Quenten Couch.

There will also be duets and soloists with Hope Fitness Ministries Dance Team, Essence Ministry Caribbean Band, Little Blessings praise dancers, and Elder Al Matlock Jr. of the Mellowaires.
JKC will host a Black Love Panel Discussion at 5 p.m. Feb. 26.

Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver will be the keynote speaker during the closing ceremony on Feb. 27, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the West Windsor Campus. College staff will prepare cuisine for the event, and college staff and friends will give an African Drumming presentation.

The Black History Month events are presented by the college’s Black History Committee and the American Association for Women in Community Colleges.
