Car Crash On I-280 In West Orange Kills Newark Teen: Police
A stolen car hit another vehicle, overturned and struck a concrete barrier. The driver died, and his passenger was seriously hurt.
WEST ORANGE, NJ — Police continue to investigate a car crash on I-280 in West Orange that killed a 17-year-old Newark resident and seriously injured another person last weekend, authorities said.
According to the NJ State Police, the crash took place at 1:15 p.m. near milepost 9.8 when a Hyundai Genesis – which was reported stolen out of Madison – struck a Honda Pilot, overturned and struck the concrete center median barrier.
Both occupants of the Hyundai were ejected from the vehicle, police said.

The driver of the Hyundai, Shakur Young, 17, of Newark, was pronounced dead at University Hospital in Newark. The passenger remains in serious condition, police said Tuesday.
The driver of the Honda didn’t report any injuries at the time of the crash, authorities said.

The eastbound portion of the highway was closed for about four hours due to the ensuing investigation. All lanes were closed and detoured.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, state police said.
