Essex County Has Some Of Worst Income Gaps In New Jersey: Census

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — If Essex County residents’ incomes were a pie, there’d be some hungry mouths at the table. According to recent U.S. Census data, the county has some astoundingly wide income gaps, with households in North Caldwell earning more than six times as much as their peers in Newark.

Patch recently developed a list of all New Jersey towns and their median household incomes, derived from the most recent data released from the U.S. Census. The statistics from the American Community Survey from 2011-2015 show a wide disparity in wealth between the richest and the poorest municipalities.

North Caldwell residents are on the high end of the spectrum, the data shows. The median income for a household in the township was $200,152.

However, the median income for a Newark household was just $33,139, a six-fold difference, according to Census data.
