HS Football Stars Are West Orange’s Version Of The ‘4 Horsemen’
They've been going to school together for 12 years. "It's much more than teammates and friends," one teen explained. "It's a family."
WEST ORANGE, NJ — When they step onto the gridiron, West Orange’s version of the Four Horsemen of Notre Dame are more than teammates. They’re family.
Jayson Raines (wide receiver), Shaki Carson (running back), Mason Murdock (quarterback) and Aquan Robinson (defensive end) are among 15 returning seniors at West Orange High School who are hoping for a state championship this season.
During last week’s practice, Rich Chrampanis of New Jersey Sports Zone interviewed Head Coach Darnell Grant and the four teens, who grew up playing Mustang football with the West Orange PAL, and are being compared to the legendary combination of Harry Stuhldreher, Jim Crowley, Don Miller and Elmer Layden.

“It’s much more than teammates and friends,” Raines said. “It’s a family. We always will be.”
The future is looking bright for the four teens, their alma mater reported Monday. Three of the four seniors are already committed to impressive football schools. Jayson Raines just signed with Stanford University, Carson is committed to Kent State, and Aquan Robinson is heading to U Mass. Murdock has had several offers and has yet to decide.

But the real triumph would be bringing a championship back to West Orange, they say.
“This year, it’s the states or bust,” Raines concluded.
Their senior year is taking place amid a strange and trying time, as the state continues to reel from the coronavirus crisis.
The team hopes to play at least six regular games. Pre-season practice begins on Sept. 14 and scrimmages on or around Sept. 28. Attendance at games will be limited based on state and NJSIAA protocols.
The decision from the NJSIAA has been a welcome opportunity to showcase the talent at West Orange High School, Grant said.
“The team keeps getting better and they’re having a great week,” Grant enthused. “All the coaches are proud of the work they’re doing.”
