WEST ORANGE, NJ — A group of four local businesses in West Orange have something in common, according to U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill: They’ve all shown guts and determination throughout the coronavirus pandemic.

Earlier this week, Sherrill joined New Jersey Assemblywoman Mila Jasey (District 27) on a tour of four West Orange businesses. Together, the lawmakers visited Hook & Reel Cajun Seafood & Bar, Harper’s Cafe, Valley Vintage, and The Rock 1925 at the Rock Spring Golf Club.

The congresswoman offered some kind words about each:

  • “Our first stop was at Hook & Reel Cajun Seafood & Bar. Throughout the pandemic, they’ve been able to stay open for takeout and delivery, doing an incredible job serving essential workers from the supermarket and hospital, fire and police.”
  • “Next, we headed into Harper's Cafe. When the pandemic hit, owner Garan jumped into action, providing lunches for students who usually got food from school and to seniors in the area. He roasts his own coffee beans and even started his own ice cream brand. I purchased beans to make coffee at home and it's delicious!”
  • “Then, we went to Valley Vintage and spoke with owner Elyse about her business and the beautiful clothes and nostalgia items she curates and sells. She pivoted during the pandemic and made use of Instagram to make sales during COVID. And as a bonus, I got my son Ike a special pin.”
  • “Lastly we went to The Rock 1925 at the Rock Spring Golf Course. West Orange Council President Cindy Matute-Brown and the managers met with us to discuss the economic development they’ve cultivated through the public course and clubhouse. I’m looking forward to bringing my family back for dinner.”
