WEATHER UPDATE: Deadly Crashes, Speed Restrictions, Black Ice Plague New Jersey's Commute

Icy conditions caused more than 100 crashes, including a 20-car New Jersey Turnpike crash that killed one person (see photos).

Icy conditions made a mess of New Jersey’s roads Tuesday, putting at risk as police scrambled to respond to more than 100 crashes Monday on New Jersey’s slick roads.

Seventy-eight car crashes and 95 motorist aids have been reported on State Police-controlled roads since midnight Monday, according to New Jersey State Police.

Less than half an inch of new snow accumulation and up to two-tenths of an inch of ice had been predicted for Northeast and Central New Jersey Monday night. This area will also experience high wind gusts of up to 21 miles-per-hour.

The following was imposed/occurred on Monday:

  • An accident on I-495 eastbound approaching Pleasant Avenue in Weehawken. Left lane closed.
  • Overturned vehicle on Route 440 in both directions north of Kennedy Boulevard in Bayonne. All lanes closed.
  • An accident on the Garden State Parkway express lanes southbound South of Exit 109 in Middletown. Right lane blocked
  • An accident on the Garden State Parkway local lanes southbound South of Exit 114 - Red Hill Rd in Holmdel. Right lane blocked.
  • An accident on the New Jersey Turnpike - Hudson County Extension westbound East of Interchange 14 - I-78 in Newark. Left lane blocked.
  • An accident on the New Jersey Turnpike inner roadway northbound north of Exit 7A - I-195 in Robbinsville. Left lane blocked.
  • An accident on the New Jersey Turnpike inner roadway southbound south of Exit 8A in Monroe. Left lane blocked.
  • An accident on the New Jersey Turnpike outer roadway northbound south of Molly Pitcher Service Area in Cranbury. Left lane blocked.
  • A 45-mph speed restriction on the New Jersey Turnpike in both directions from Exit12 in Linden to the George Washington Bridge, and 35 mph from Exit 12 to 7A.
  • Icing on Skyline Drive in both directions between I-287 and Greenwood Lake Turnpike in Oakland. All lanes closed until further notice
  • A 35-mph speed restriction on the Goethals Bridge and the Outerbridge Crossing
  • A 35-mph speed restriction on the Betsy Ross Bridge in both directions between the New Jersey side and Pennsylvania
  • A 45-mph speed restriction on the Garden State Parkway in both directions from Exit 124 in Sayreville to the New York state line
  • An accident on the Palisades Interstate Parkway northbound area of Exit 4 - US 9W. One lane blocked.
  • A vehicle spun out on I-95 southbound at Exit 4 n Hopewell. Left shoulder remains closed.

Crews and property owners already struggling with up to several feet of snow on the ground and on some roofs will need to prepare and make room for additional snow, according to Accuweather.
