West Orange Library Brick Facade Collapses, Destroys Two Cars

The outer brick façade of the West Orange Public Library collapsed Thursday afternoon, closing the library until further notice, a library spokesperson stated.

No injuries were reported and no fines have been issued in connection with the collapse, a representative from the Library stated on Facebook Thursday night.

West Orange Police Sgt. Andrew Berkery told NJ.com that the 3:30 p.m. collapse “destroyed” two vehicles. The Mount Pleasant Avenue build was immediately evacuated after the collapse. Fire and Police inspections are currently underway.

“Thankfully no one was injured and repairs are underway,” West Orange Town Councilwoman Susan McCartney stated to Patch.

The Library will remain closed until further notice; a re-opening date has not been announced. Many took to Facebook to comment on the bizarre collapse, with one user calling the library a “treasure in West Orange.”
