YMCA of the Oranges Hosting 'Big Crunch' to Promote Healthy Eating

There will be 2,000 donated apples and 20 pounds of donated apple slices for synchronized eating.

About 2,400 children and staff are ready to sound off about healthy eating.

The Metropolitan YMCA of the Oranges is taking part in the Metro Y branches’ festivities for Healthy U/Food Day this Friday at 4 p.m. with the Big Crunch in which children and staff all take a big chomp out of an apple at the same time to kick off the party.

Floyd Avillo, president of RLB Food Distributors in West Caldwell and its supplier, Hudson River Fruit Distributors of Milton, NY are donating 2,000 apples and 20 pounds of apple slices for the synchronized apple eating.

“Big Crunch” events are taking place at the following locations: The East Orange Y’s Turrell Gym, 100 N Arlington Ave, East Orange; Harrison Elementary School, 148 N Livingston Ave., Livingston; The Civic House, 124 Dunnell Road, Maplewood; or Franklin Borough School, 50 Washington Ave., Franklin.
