HILLSDALE, NJ - A high school football player in Hillsdale is one of several students from across the tri-state region being recognized for his moves on the field and off of it.
Stephen Begen, a Pascack Valley Regional High School student, was named as one of the nominees for the 2019 USA Football Heart of a Giant Award, a recognition presented by the Hospital for Special Surgery and New York Giants to student athletes for their commitment, teamwork, character and dedication.
If Begen gets enough support from online fans, he can earn his school’s football program $10,000 and be honored on the field during a New York Giants’ home game. Click here to vote through Oct. 7.

When he was in 8th grade, Begen's football season came to an abrupt end after breaking his leg during the Hillsdale Hawks season opener. Instead of blaming football for his injury, Begen took away an important lesson from the experience.
"Football taught me that just because I got knocked down, it doesn't mean I should not get back up and keep fighting," the teen said.

Pascack Valley High School Head Coach Len Cusumano says, “He leads both by example and by directing our team in certain activities during the season. He clearly displays great character and teamwork in everything he does daily - It is an honor to be Stephen's coach.”
All six finalists and four honorable mention finalists will receive $1,000 for their school’s football program, and the winner will get an additional $9,000. The grand prize winner will be honored on the field during a New York Giants’ home game.
