Carteret Asked To Approve 242-Unit Apt. Complex in Arts District

CARTERET, NJ — The Carteret development boom continues: The Carteret planning board will likely give approval to a massive new apartment complex — complete with a rooftop bar and lounge — to be built near the waterfront.

This new apartment complex will be located along Cooke Avenue in the Cooke Avenue Mixed-Use Redevelopment District. That lot is currently being used as a staging area for construction of the Carteret Performing Arts Center, which has also yet to be built.

Should it be approved, the complex will have 242 apartments, more than 15,000 square feet of restaurant and bar space and 2,000 square feet of retail. The apartments will be market-rate one- and two-bedrooms, some with dens, and there will also be a 7,500 square-feet bar/lounge on the roof.

This is all part of Carteret trying to aggressively reinvent itself as a modern, trendy bedroom community for New York City commuters. This summer, Carteret opened its brand-new marina, which offers very competitive pricing for anyone wishing to dock a boat there. And Carteret Mayor Dan Reiman continues to push to bring Manhattan ferry station to Carteret, promising to build a ferry terminal, plus parking and a Waterfront Events Center if a ferry provider can come forward.

Woodbridge is undergoing a similar rebirth, particularly in the Avenel section, where weekend and late night NJ Transit train service was just added at the Avenel train station, following the opening of the 500-unit "transit-village" apartment complex there, Station Village at Avenel.

The Carteret Performing Arts Center, or CPAC, is scheduled to open in September of 2020. It will rival Woodridge's Performing Arts Center in Avenel, which also just opened this year.
