Frank J. Suchan, WWII POW, Dies at 91

Suchan spent more than two years as a U.S. prisoner of war in a German army internment camp in Poland during World War II.

Frank J. Suchan, a Woodbridge resident who spent more than two years as a U.S. prisoner of war in a German army internment camp in Poland during World War II, died of natural causes June 26 at the Cranbury Center in Monroe Township. He was 91 years old.

A native of Elizabeth, Suchan learned the butcher trade while living in Europe after WWII ended. After returning home, he met and married Mary Smerecki of Perth Amboy in 1948. They had four children, and Suchan enjoyed a long career as a butcher with P.A. Packing and Lake Foods Inc. in Perth Amboy. Later, he served as a court aide with the Middlesex County Sheriff's Department in New Brunswick until retiring in 1983.  

Suchan is survived by his spouse, Mary Smerecki Suchan; sister-in-law Eleanor Suchan of Metuchen, son Ted and wife Charlene Suchan of Burgess, Va.; daughter Theresa Mackey and husband Bob of Bridgewater, Mass.; son Raymond and wife Debbie of Monroe Twp., son-in-law David Morin of Marlboro; 11 grandchildren and one great grandchild. 

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations go to the restoration fund for St. Stephens Church, 490 State St., Perth Amboy, NJ 08861.
