New Jersey Coast Line Service Remains Suspended After Derailment

Crews continue to repair tracks and schedules will be impacted through the weekend due to the derailment of a New York City-bound train.

WOODBRIDGE, NJ — New Jersey Coast Line service remains suspended at least through the remainder of Wednesday as crews continue to repair track from a derailment that took place near Woodbridge early Tuesday morning, New Jersey Transit officials said.

Two people were injured in the derailment, which took place early Tuesday morning near the Woodbridge station involving a train bound for New York City, according to reports. Train 3292 was set to arrive at Penn Station at 1:18 a.m. but derailed around 12:20 a.m. near Woodbridge. According to reports, that eight cars derailed in Perth Amboy and that all of the cars remained upright.

The accident, which remains under investigation, suspended travel between Perth Amboy and Penn Station throughout Tuesday and service remains suspended until further notice. A New Jersey Transit spokeswoman said Wednesday that it is unknown how long the repair to the tracks will take and that service will remain suspended until travel can be resumed safely.

According to the New Jersey transit website, train service will operate on the regular weekday schedule between Bay Head and South Amboy with shuttle bus service from South Amboy, Perth Amboy, Woodbridge, Avenel to Metropark Station on a load-and-go basis for continued travel between Metropark and New York.

Reverse shuttle bus service will also be provided from Metropark to Avenel, Woodbridge, Perth Amboy and South Amboy for customers traveling between South Amboy and Bay Head.

According to transit officials, starting Thursday and running through the weekend, trains will resume operating along the entire length of the North Jersey Coast Line on a modified schedule and the substitute busing between South Amboy and Metropark will end. This modified schedule will result in service every two hours for Hazlet, Middletown, Red Bank and Little Silver for all four days. All other stations will operate hourly service.
